Many business owners and leaders have explored neuroscience to some degree.
You may have come across cognitive bias, heuristics, habit loops and emotional regulation.
They’re all useful but they’re all at the interpretive level.
They explain how we make sense of what we believe we’re seeing and experiencing.
Far fewer have explored the deeper understanding modern neuroscience now points to…
The generative level.
What’s quietly shaping everything we perceive, everything we decide and everything we create in business.
Priors.
Priors precede cognitive bias.
Priors generate the perceptual field in which biases operate.
Neuroscientists tell us priors are the brain’s non-conscious assumptions and expectations that literally generate what we perceive and experience.
This reflects a greater (and a far more radical) understanding of perception.
Priors don’t just influence how we interpret what shows up; they determine what shows up in the first place.
According to neuroscientists, we each run tens of thousands of ‘priors’ every day and these automatic assumptions generate the version of ‘reality’ we believe we’re responding to.
This is the gap in most neuroscience-based coaching and change advice:
Most approaches operate at the interpretive level whilst priors sit at the generative level.
In other words, most approaches focus on addressing outcomes and symptoms.
Awareness of ‘priors’ enables us to effect change at source.
And here’s what’s both immensely powerful and immeasurably valuable:
Once you start to become aware of what’s happening at the generative level, patterns stop repeating, perceived constraints dissolve, new possibilities appear and results change significantly.
This isn’t the result of more effort, it’s the result of a shift in awareness.
A shift in what’s being perceived.
If you’re a leader who wants to create a significant and sustainable commercial leap (without more effort), I’ve created a short PDF that explains how to begin to apply this science-based understanding directly in your business.
